Rethinking the Return: Bringing your teams back to the office

Remote working has changed how we think and feel about working in an office, and where working from home has become the norm, a sudden return to the office can feel disruptive and unnecessary. People don’t like change so how you handle this one really counts.

Focus on Purpose

Employees need to understand why being in the office matters. Is it collaboration, innovation, mentoring or culture building? Communicating the purpose behind office time helps people see the value beyond just being a body in a chair.

Reimagine the Workspace

Working in an office should offer an experience that remote work cannot. Consider collaborative spaces and quiet zones, plus amenities that make time in the office productive and enjoyable. Create an environment that demonstrates employee presence is valuable.

Flexibility Is Key

It’s not just about location. Working from home means people’s schedules have shifted in line with new working patterns, and they can’t just shift back. If you’re now the parent doing two school runs a day, well, you can’t just bin that off. Hybrid models, core days in the office and flexible schedules allow employees to own and manage their time whilst still getting the benefit of in-person co-working and collaboration.

Community and Culture

Humans need connection, and the office can be the perfect place for this, but it has to be built. You’ll get community if everyone is sitting typing with earbuds in. Be intentional, create useful team building, mentorship and social moments that make office days something employees enjoy rather than endure.

Understand that change takes time

A successful return to the office truly acknowledges what your employees need, and it will take time. Caregiving responsibilities, long commutes or health concerns, people will need time to adjust and make decisions about the ‘ return to office’. Take the time to listen and take feedback often during the process to make sure future decisions are sustainable.
